CDC Federal Eviction Moratorium Expires ; 15 Million Nationwide At-Risk of Homelessness
The federal ban on evictions across the country came to an end July 31, 2021. This now means landlords across the country can legally evict people who have fallen behind on rent. While at the state level here in Oregon, there is the Safe Harbor law that protects tenants who’ve applied for the Oregon Emergency Rental Assistance (OERAP) from eviction for up to 60 days (90 if you’re in Multnomah County), and the Rent Debt Grace Period, which gives renters the ability to pay debt incurred from March 2020-June 2021, to be paid off until February 2022.
The CDC says currently it’s exploring what legal routes are available for another national eviction moratorium, as is the White House.
More than 15 million people in approximately 6.5 million households are at risk of eviction across the country, according to a new study released by the Aspen Institute.
