Rent Debt Grace Period Expired February -- Here's How to Protect Yourself

A critical protection has expired for tenants, and we want you to know what it means for you and how to protect yourself. The Rent Debt Grace Period (Senate Bill 282) which prevented evictions for non-payment of rent debt accrued between April 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021  ended February 28th, 2022.

We want you to know that there is still help available. The state’s rent assistance portal Oregon Rental Assistance Program (OERAP) is still open to folks who haven’t applied, but it will be closing soon so submit yours now! Applying for rent assistance through the state or any of the 17 Community Action Agencies makes you automatically eligible for the “Safe Harbor” law which prevents evictions for non-payment as long as you have a pending application before June 30th. But do not wait until June because funds may run out soon. So yes, even if you have a pending eviction, applying for OERAP and submitting your Safe Harbor letter to your landlord can prevent your eviction or buy you some more time!
